Computer Programmer

Bio: My name is Caspar Wylie, and I have been passionately computer programming for as long as I can remember. I am currently a teenager, 17, and have taught myself to write code with initial help from an employee at Google in Mountain View California, who truly motivated me. I program everyday and am always putting new ideas into perspective. I try to keep a good balance between jobs and personal projects in order to advance my research and understanding. My interest in computers started with very basic electronic engineering when I was only 6, before I then moved on to software development at the age of about 8. Since, I have experimented with many different areas of computing, from web security to computer vision.

A Look at Gary Marcus’s Deep Learning: A Critical Appraisal

A Look at Gary Marcus’s Deep Learning: A Critical Appraisal

There are many mixed opinions regarding the future of deep learning, and how far it can really go. Gary Marcus’s paper, “Deep Learning: A Critical Appraisal” overviews the social and more technical concerns with deep learning, and examines the possibility of it simply hitting a wall. Having only reached mainstream technology at acceptable production standards […]

Choosing the right activation function in a neural network

Choosing the right activation function in a neural network

Choosing the right activation function in a neural network Activation functions are one of the many parameters you must choose to gain optimal success and performance with your neural network. In this article I’m going to assume you understand the basics of how a neural network works, and will cover specifically the process involving activation, […]

How machine learning is used to make money, and more recently, bitcoins

How machine learning is used to make money, and more recently, bi...

Not only is Machine Learning earning specialists a good salary, but algorithms are being used to make money. It is gaining notoriety for solving just about any problem, dramatically improving technology, breaking barriers, and even worrying some of us. Making money via machine learning tends to revolve around the ability to predict, target, and produce. […]

Neural Networks and art: Music, Painting and Poetry

Neural Networks and art: Music, Painting and Poetry

Recently, I have been exploring the creative side of artificial neural networks. People have been wondering what these mysterious models can come up with, and this creativity is the controversial side of artificial intelligence; the side that some people fear. The art industry seem to feel immune to the idea that AI could replace all […]

Understanding and optimizing neural network hyperparameters part 3: Other parameters, and optimizing

Understanding and optimizing neural network hyperparameters part ...

Understanding and Optimizing Neural Network Hyperparameters Series The learning rate The Neurons Other parameters, and optimizing   In the other parts I have explained the main hyperparameters used to train a neural network, and how they can contribute to the networks success. However, optimizing these values can be tedious. Once the correct combination of all […]

Understanding and Optimizing Neural Network Hyperparameters part 2: The Neurons

Understanding and Optimizing Neural Network Hyperparameters part ...

Intro In this part 2 will discuss how neural nets are structured, how the structure can affect the success of a model, and why. The actual design of a neural network is very much determined by the data that’s supplied. You will already know how outside layers are formed, where each bit of data is […]

Understanding and optimizing neural network hyperparameters part 1: The learning rate

Understanding and optimizing neural network hyperparameters part ...

Introduction to the series When first trying to understand a neural network, one of the most debated and perhaps mysterious aspects of them are the parameters that contribute to their success. These parameters are for you to ultimately decide. As it stands, they tend to be determined by obvious methods of tuning, and trial and […]
